My name is Catherine and I am Deaf. My husband is Deaf and we have a 23 year old daughter and a 6 year old son. They are hearing but we all communicate happily in sign language.
I have been a board member of the Fiji Association of the Deaf (FAD) since its inception. Back in the year 2000 there were just a few of us who, together with a few support persons and friends (who were teachers at the special schools), got together to discuss and make plans on setting up an association for the Deaf.
I held the position of Treasurer and Finance Secretary in the FAD board committee for 3 consecutive terms as well as Secretary in board committee for our umbrella organization, the Fiji Disabled Persons Federation (FDPF). In the years since my involvement with the FAD, I counseled and mentored our young women in the areas of education, employment, marriage/relationships and life skills.
I worked at JS Hill and Associates as an accounts clerk for 21 years before joining FDPF in 2016.
