Dr Nicole Kalms is the Founding Director of the XYX Lab at Monash University, which leads national research in Space, Gender and Communication. In this role, Dr Kalms is leading two significant research projects: ‘Urban Exposure: Interactively Mappin the Systems of Sexual Violence in Cities’ and ‘Women and Girls Only: Understanding the Spaces of Sexual Harassment in Australian Public Transport’. Nicole’s first book Hypersexual City (Routledge, 2017) examines sexualised and pornographically-styled aspects of urban life of neoliberal cities. Nicole writes for a diverse non-academic audience and is regularly invited to speak to the public about sexuality and urban space at major national and international cultural institutions. Nicole is committed to understanding the ways that gender contributes to shaping behaviour in Australian cities.
