Coined the ‘Facebook Farmer’, Joseph Macharia is an entrepreneur, agribusiness expert, Associate Board Director of Kyeema Foundation, and an Ashoka Fellow for Social Entrepreneurship. In 2012 Joseph founded Mkulima Young (“Young Farmer” in Swahili), a premier networking and marketing platform for smallholder farmers and players in the agricultural value chain in Kenya and East Africa at large. The basic platform is developed using a social network framework that enables farmers to interact with traders, retailers, consumers, and each other. The network encourages the emergence of a sustainable and fair marketplace, increased productivity through provision of farming information, and increased profitability be reducing information asymmetry. Since its establishment, the organisation has amassed 128,000 on-line followers.
